BROOKLYN (March 20, 2025)Today, Higher Heights mourns the loss of one of our beloved founding mothers, trusted advisor, and a Political Action Committee Member, Joyce Johnson. Joyce was not only a trailblazer in New York State politics, but also a guiding light and mentor to generations of Black women leaders—including myself—who were inspired by her fierce advocacy and unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and democracy.

Joyce’s career was marked by an extraordinary breadth of leadership across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Whether as a senior executive, community organizer, political strategist, or candidate for public office, she led with integrity, wisdom, and passion. A proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and a graduate of Howard University, Joyce brought a deep sense of purpose to every room she entered and every campaign she touched.

As a founding circle member of the Higher Heights for American active member of Higher Heights Political Action Committee and a trusted voice on our advisory board, Joyce helped shape the very foundation of our mission: to build Black women’s political power and leadership from the voting booth to elected office. She believed in the power of collective action and was relentless in her pursuit of a more reflective and representative democracy.

Her legacy is felt in the countless women she mentored and, in the movements, she helped to advance—whether as a field director for historic campaigns, a delegate at Democratic National Conventions, or as a vocal champion for civic education and community engagement.

On behalf of the Higher Heights family, we extend our deepest condolences to Joyce’s loved ones and all who were touched by her brilliance and generosity. While we grieve this profound loss, we also recommit ourselves to carrying forward the work to which she dedicated her life.

Joyce Johnson will always remain an indelible part of our story and our hearts. May she rest in power.
