Statement from Higher Heights on Democratic Presidential Nominee Kamala Harris’ Vice Presidential Running Mate Tim Walz
BROOKLYN (August 6, 2024)—When we announced our endorsement for Vice President Kamala Harris to become the next President of the United States, we cited her proven track record, her commitment to justice, and her visionary leadership that makes her uniquely qualified to guide our nation through these turbulent times and toward a brighter, more equitable future.
Today, as we celebrate the 59th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Harris’ pick of Tim Walz, a Voting Rights Act champion, as her Vice Presidential running mate proves that progress, justice, and unity will be at the center of a Harris-Walz administration.
Walz has a career of proven leadership and advocacy for all American working families, but has specifically used his position to strengthen and protect the freedoms of Black Americans and their families.
In May, he signed the Minnesota Voting Rights Act, which revives private enforcement after an 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling last year limited who can sue under the Voting Rights Act of 1965, weakening a centerpiece of the Civil Rights Movement.
In July, he signed the African American Family Preservation Act, which bolsters protections for families confronted with separation in the foster care system.
In February 2023, he signed the CROWN Act to combat the discrimination Black and brown people face in the workplace and at school because of their hair texture or style.
And in 2021, he established the Missing and Murdered African American Women’s Task Force to address the violence plaguing Black women.
“Vice President Harris answered the call and spent the last three and half years being in true partnership with President Joe Biden to lead this country to unprecedented heights and to put working American families first. Her heels are tough to fill but picking a partner like Tim Walz, a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, who has delivered for working families and put forth policies to protect Black women, doubles down on her commitment to building an administration that reflects those values.” – Glynda C. Carr, President and CEO of Higher Heights.
We are excited to stand with the Harris-Walz ticket and choose freedom and democracy for our future generations.
